Muay Thai Fit at ATT Altitude

People want to be in shape but are bored with regular exercise. Mainly, because many people just don’t know how to exercise, which workout routines to follow, how to cycle them, which ones will meet their specific needs or possible restrictions etc.

Machines make it easier, but not effortless. Weight loss plateaus do to a lack of understanding. People don’t know enough routines to change things up and they simply get on the same machines day after day. Exercise becomes mundane rather quickly, weight loss stalls, and people just quit.

The biggest successes come from people who find something active they love to do. When someone discovers they love to run, love to bike, or hike this makes a transition to a healthier lifestyle much easier. These are things that could be done daily. Other activities include basketball, tennis, and other such games that require a high physical output.

Combat training in any form is arduous and you can get you in the best shape of your life. There is a reason people gravitate to these forms of exercise in lieu of the traditional forms of conditioning. They’re just more fun and you feel as if you are learning something. It beats spending a half hour an elliptical reading US Magazine.

I’ve trained in most combat sports and still do. I currently train and complete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I train in boxing, MMA, and now more specifically Muay Thai. Every single one of these combat forms puts your body through a different kind of conditioning. I went into BJJ and grappling from competing in Olympic length Triathlons. I figured, “I’ve gotta be in the best shape compared to all these guys.” I’ve never been more wrong. Grappling conditioning is a completely different type of conditioning. For 3 years I’ve trained and successfully competed in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Training has kept me in what I thought was peak condition. It was peak condition for BJJ. Then I went to a Muay Thai class hosted by Master Hung Tran in Longmont.

I showed up for a regular Muay Thai class at Master Tran’s invitation. The group was extremely diverse. When we were split up into lines I had a woman who was in her late fifties and a young woman who was about twenty. As class went on and we paired up for various drills, I saw that we had people of all ages, sizes, and backgrounds. They all had one thing in common…they all had better Muay Thai conditioning than me. These people were having a great time and were blowing through kicking drills that would have professional fighters hunched over sucking air. Master Tran has created a Muay Thai program that is safe for any person at any fitness level and age. His program is based around the principles of teaching the technical aspects of Muay Thai while getting people in the best shape of their lives. Most of these people have no desire to compete in professional combat sports (although some fighters are mixed in the class) they are just average people who wanted to do something fun and different to get in shape, and in great shape is what they are. These people have also committed themselves to learning the art of Muay Thai. Through a great belt system based on both technique and fitness requirements, these people ascend the ranks. Now their devotion has become about more than just meeting their fitness/weight loss goals.

If you are interested in Master Tran's Academy in Longmont Click here

After my visit, I invited Master Tran to our gym, American Top Team Altitude to do a seminar. Bobby Lashley was so impressed with Master Tran’s program that we have opted to work hard to implement his program in our gym. This is where we are today. In the coming year we will work with Master Tran to get officially certified under his association, but in the meantime we will be starting a Muay Thai Fit program at ATT Altitude using the exact curriculum Master Tran uses at his academy.

This program is for people of all ages and fitness levels. The goal is to help you reach your fitness and health goals through Muay Thai training. This is also a class that will offer technical training for people who wish to learn the true art of Muay Thai. I can promise you a few things if you come down and try our Muay Thai fit class, a great time, a great workout, and a great learning environment for Muay Thai.

Many women come into our gym and are understandably afraid to try our combat classes such as boxing, MMA, and BJJ. They see the men training and feel they have no place in those classes. This is completely wrong, women are more than welcome and encourages to try every class we offer. Until Muay Thai, Most of our female members stuck to our cardio classes. Now we have a technical combat class that is also a conditioning class that is filling up with women. This is a very exciting for us all.

Since implementing the program we have a great class going with a lot of fun energy and desire to improve both physically and technically. Our class is 60% female with three married couples attending class together. They support each other both in class and outside of it. I often joke that my class has become a form of couple’s therapy. More than that, many of the members who came in with specific fitness and weight loss goals, now have specific Muay Thai goals. What are your goals and what will they become once you begin your journey?

Come down to ATT Altitude and try our class, let's see where it takes you.

Holiday Weight Gain- A vicious cycle

Poll surveys show that one third of the American public make a new year’s resolution to lose weight. Respondents who made a resolution to lose weight said their goal was between 10 and 29 pounds, 48 percent. The second most popular weight loss goal was 30-49 pounds, 21 percent. (From News-Medical.net)

This is the best time of year for gyms and personal trainers. These people are referred to as the “new year’s resolution crowd”. Gyms bank on these potential customers. They are guaranteed their share of the masses for at least three months. They put heavy marketing into driving as many of these people to their gym as possible.

Here at ATT Altitude, we want you during the holiday season. This is the time to boost your metabolism and maintain your weight through the holidays and make your true goal weight easily attainable in the New Year.

A person weighs 200lbs and wishes to get down to a healthy weight of 160lbs. They plan to make this their new year’s resolution…but it’s the first week of November. Over the holidays they gain 20lbs, all the while telling themselves they will eventually start their weight loss January 1st…so all the weight gain is okay…isn’t it? When the new year rolls around, they are 220lbs and now have to bust their rump to get back down to 200lbs, that 160lbs is a memory, or a destination that moved further down the road. They will now take twice as much time to reach your initial target weight. That’s if they stick to the resolution.

Let’s get you fired up now. At least begin the exercise portion of your weight loss. Let us kick start your metabolism and mitigate the damage of holiday eating. Our fitness programs and top-notch trainers are the perfect recipe for maintaining your weight through the holidays. More than likely you will begin your weight loss early. As far as New Year’s resolutions, always remember, fitness is a journey…not a destination. Start your journey and enjoy the ride.

Giving back- Bobby Lashley at Paris Elementary

American Top Team Altitude is located in Aurora, CO., roughly 5 minutes from Century Theatres where less than 3 months ago a tragic event affected the community. 90% of our members live in the immediate vicinity. Bobby Lasley encourages his team to stay involved in the community. His gyms and promotions not only work to benefit Colorado as a whole, but his non-profit organization (Lashley Fitness Foundation) and community programs work to help Aurora youth.

Everyone in Colorado and the entire United States has been touched by the recent incident at Century Theatres in Aurora. Many are also familiar with the fact that the shooter had several explosives wired in his apartment with the intent to take out an entire floor and possibly the entire structure. The apartment complex is located right across the street from Paris Elementary. When Bobby and I visited the school we were shown his (now) boarded up window from a window in the school’s gym. This is too close for comfort for any student, parent, or faculty member; however Paris Elementary has chosen to move on.

After the devastation of the Century shootings, Aurora is working to rebuild the trust and safety we as a community once felt. Something as simple as catching a movie became something you had to consider heavily. When basic freedoms are threatened you feel…helpless. Children are resilient. Their young minds often don’t comprehend what is happening around them. When you were young you were fearless and made of rubber. You’d try anything once just to see what would happen. You were a daredevil. Trying to comprehend the events that took place is different for every child, but what the children do notice is the panic and fear from us as adults, their mentors. They notice their parents, teachers, mentors, siblings and more. They sense our terror and sadness. It’s like a dark cloud that descends over us all and no matter how much you try to smile in the face of such darkness, you can’t. This is why we need to bring ourselves and our children back to happier times. It’s important that we get our children back to being children.

CJ Cain from Paris Elementary, a thoughtful and extraordinary teacher, contacted Bobby Lashley directly with the intention of bringing him to the school for a fitness day. The focus of the entire event is to help the children have fun again while getting in shape. We want the kids to remember how fun exercise can be and help them put the entire situation behind them.

Bobby was beyond eager to contribute to such a positive event. It’s an opportunity to give back and spread the word about health and fitness to our youth. When we visited Paris the excitement of the student body was electric. The kids were so excited to see this WWE and MMA superstar in their school. The faculty was equally thrilled. Paris Elementary is a wonderful school that offers a top tier fitness and educational program to their students.

Bobby and his staff of trainers from American Top Team Altitude in Aurora will be on hand all day on September 7th to put every student at Paris Elementary through various fitness stations. They will emphasize the focus on strength, agility, and speed while having fun.

American Top Team Altitude is a family fitness center located in Aurora. Bobby has made his belief in “family” fitness very clear. Bobby is a parent and a pillar to the children of Aurora. We look forward to working with the community of Aurora for a long time to come.

Youth Boxing and Fitness

The Youth Boxing and Fitness Program is created in a way to establish a strong understanding of the fundamentals of fitness and sport. The youth who participate in this program are exposed to the fundamental movements of various exercises such as the squat, lunge and push up. The proper techniques of these various movements are directed in a manner that is suitable for children and young adults to understand. The squat is described as sitting in a chair or on a ball, while the form associated with the squat is delivered in rhyme and goes as follows; "heads up 7 up, chest up, toes are pointed straight as we drive up." A strong emphasis on the proper movement is always expressed and encouraged.

The fitness program is directed as a proper conditioning tool to transition into the sport aspect of our program. The sport aspect of our program is what we like to call the "Sweet Science" or in other words Boxing. Although squats and boxing are different concentrations of fitness, the emphasis and delivery of proper technique is consistent. The youth are exposed to the proper movements associated with boxing. The delivery of this information is also given in terms of proper understanding for the youth. The jab which is a valuable asset in boxing is one of the first punches our youth will learn. The delivery of this punch is described to the youth as "playing tag". As with any other sport there is a competition aspect, our program also offers a competition aspect aside from general fitness, so when describing the jab as "playing tag" we are coaching the youth to deliver the punch with speed and accuracy.

While coaching our instructions, the program aims to influence participation in the competition aspect of our program; as with any other sport the role of competition allows a formal application and understanding of the fundamentals and technique associated with the sport. Therefore our youth are encouraged to participate in drills that involve offensive and defensive sparring as a part of training.

Our belief is that exercise and fitness are essential in our everyday activities and we encourage and promote this lifestyle to our youth. We strive to facilitate an environment that fosters growth and discipline through fitness. The Youth Boxing and Fitness Program is progressing strong and we look forward to the growth of our participants, we are going to utilize this site as a way to share and track our progression, so please feel free to comment or leave any suggestions...

Fit kids ARE smarter!

I’m a very active person. With my first child, I didn’t consider how my fitness habits impacted him. I just exercised regularly and whether my son noticed or not…I really didn’t give it much thought. When he was coordinated enough to join sports, he did without hesitation, soccer, football, baseball, whatever. He was a very physically apt child.

This didn’t strike me as unique because when I was growing up, all kids were physical. We all loved to be outside with our friends wearing ourselves out for hours doing just about anything that required energy. The worse thing that could possibly happen to us was getting “grounded”. Nobody wanted that. Not being able to go outside and play with your friends was a death sentence.  This isn’t the case nowadays. Just take a drive around a few neighborhoods…where the heck are all the kids? Back in the day, you could bump into a group of kids every block playing sports, skating, biking, chasing each other, just moving. Kids aren’t out and about nowadays, they’re indoors, living a sedentary existence during the most crucial time of their lives. The time in which healthy active habits can be formed and carried through their entire lives. A time where balance and coordination is honed during awkward growth spurts.

When my son was in elementary school I learned that he didn’t have physical education class until sixth grade. This was never more evident then when my wife asked him to show us jumping jacks when he was ten…he couldn’t do them, didn’t have the coordination, was never taught. Are you serious? I was in P.E. in first grade and I worked hard to get my Presidential Physical Education patch every single year through all of elementary school.

I kept my son active in sports and soon we enrolled him in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Kickboxing. This was just around the time his hormones were raging and so was he. It was in an effort to help him learn humility. What he got was so much more. My son is a baseball fanatic, he loves to play it, watch it, dream about it. He was always “okay” but never the best player. After ramping up his physical fitness to include martial arts, baseball, basketball, and even tennis, his skills on the field began to blossom. The last two years he made the all star team and this year he won every award for his league, best batting average, fastest runner, most bases stolen, fastest throw, and on and on. On top of all this, his grades increased to perfection. My son has maintained a 4.0 GPA from 6th to 8th grade and this earned him admission and a scholarship to Regis High School.

I never attempted to put it all together. The physical fitness he engaged in and his grades. I just thanked God for blessing me with such an intelligent and driven child. But after reading Fit kids are smarter in the Huffington Post by former Olympian Jeff Galloway, I started to understand the direct connection between my son’s physical prowess and intellectual achievements. I continued to read and found another article in the New York Times, and another on active.com.

When my second child, my little princess Janessa, came along. I started to realize that my fit lifestyle directly influenced my children. My daughter could barely stand on her own before she was trying to exercise like me. Just like my son, my daughter became physical the moment she was coordinated enough. Much to my wife’s dismay, Janessa took to boxing at the age of five. My wife wanted a gymnast, now she’s got a six-year-old girl who can throw crisp punch combinations and jump rope for five minutes straight. No joke.

I am a trainer myself and I train in cross fit, kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and anything else that gets my heart rate up. My entire family trains at one place…American Top Team Altitude. My daughter is part of the youth boxing program. My son and I compete regularly in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions and we kickbox together.

Don’t let your children be part of the 17% that are currently obese, or the almost 30% that are completely sedentary. Make physical fitness a family affair. Come check out our Family fitness center and let’s get the entire family where they should be…happy and healthy!

Heavyweight Flying Armbar

Flying armbars are rare to begin with. Flying armbars that actually land are even more elusive...but a flying armbar from a 6'7" Heavyweight fighter...is a Unicorn. ATT Altitude Coach and Trainer Alex Huddleston landed what he called a "semi" flying armbar. Whether he leapt into the skies or merely hopped, he landed the darn thing. This was at the last Fight to Win Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournament in Colorado Springs. Huddleston is a striking instructor at the fitness center, but he is one heavyweight who has not neglected his wrestling and BJJ. He trains with Bobby Lashley and BJJ professor Ethan Day honing his ground skills and has not missed a tournament since moving to the Colorado gym. The move and his overall performance for the day and the months prior earned Alex his Blue Belt.

ATT Altitude had 12 competitors in multiple divisions and took home 7 gold medals. This is only our second tournament as a team under Professor Ethan Day's BJJ program.

The flying armbar is a direct result of a seminar Professor Ethan set up at ATT Altitude with BJJ black belt Leonard Pecanha weeks prior to competition. On June 30th he has 4th degree black belt Renato Tavares conducting a seminar at ATT Altitude in Aurora, CO.

Professor Ethan is building one of the strongest and fastest growing BJJ programs in Aurora, possibly Colorado. Come down to the gym and try out our BJJ program. There is a kids program and an adult program.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is Mon - Fri 730pm til 830pm
No-Gi grappling is Mon, Wed, Fri 6pm til 730pm

WWE/TNA wrestling star and MMA champion Bobby Lashley opens new gym in Aurora

Bobby Lashley came to prominence in the Pro Wrestling world while working for such promotions as WWE, ECW, Raw, and TNA Wrestling.  Lashley was a fan favorite in all the promotions because of his size, charisma and athletic ability.  In 2008 Lashley made his professional MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) debut.  He burst onto the MMA scene using his unmatched wrestling skills to dominate his first five opponents with four being finished in the first round.  Lashley has committed himself fully to his MMA training.  To date Bobby Lashley has amassed an impressive 7-1 record in the world’s fastest growing sport and is currently the Shark Fights Heavyweight Champion.
In March 2010 Bobby Lashley announced the grand opening of his first gym,American Top Team Altitude, an affiliate of one of the most prominent MMA gyms in the United States, American Top Team. “This is my dream,” Bobby said,  “I’ve always wanted to open a gym. I have a degree in recreation management, I have a degree in business management, so putting those together is opening up a gym.”  The gym enjoyed great success as a provider of top-notch fitness programs for the entire family.  ATT Altitude is a full service gym that offers various classes such as cardio kickboxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, No-Gi grappling, boxing, cardio boxing, total body conditioning, kettle bell training and more.  The classes are available for the entire family.  Adults, children and teens all have options to choose from.
The trainers at ATT Altitude are extremely knowledgeable with varied backgrounds.  They range from several professional athletes to a crossfit trainer and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt.  The classes are designed to help any person, at any fitness level, meet their health goals.
Mixed Martial Arts training has become a preferred training method for people searching for a multitude of results.  NFL players are now training MMA in the off-season.  MMA training methods have also been featured on the television show The Biggest Loser.  Because of this, the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), the number one MMA fight promotion in the world, has begun opening a chain of fitness centers focused on MMA classes for the entire family.  These gyms are not fighter camps they are focused strictly on the average person who is interested in the training to meet their personal fitness goals.
Bobby Lashley opened his ATT Altitude gym to bring advanced and effective training methods to anyone looking to reach their fitness goals.  Due to the success of his first gym, Lashley has now moved his gym to a new 20,000 square foot facility in Aurora.  The new ATT Altitude gym features even more great classes and affordable prices for the entire family.  Adult and kids programs and even a daycare will be present to meet the needs of any family looking to train at the facility. “I’m gonna find a way that I can have every kid that wants to train at this gym, train at this gym,” Bobby has said.  The gym also features a supplement shop and pro shop where clothing and training equipment is available for purchase.  ATT Altitude is the largest MMA gym in Aurora, maybe the largest in Colorado.
Residents of Aurora have benefited from Mr. Lashley’s efforts to bring unparalleled training to the average person looking to improve.   Now they will have the chance to do this at an even bigger and better facility.
ATT Altitude is also a phenomenal facility for any fighter looking for a place to train, and anyone interested in getting into the world of MMA. “What I’d like to do is build a strong Colorado (fight) team and bring in guys from other states to fight against our guys.”  Bobby continues, “We’d like to get some fighters and take care of them.  Get them on some fight cards.  Let them get some amateur fights, build them up to pro, and keep going higher, and we don’t want to let them go.  We are going to treat them right and produce some stars.”  Bobby Lashley’s LMG (Lashley Management Group) brand has successfully put on four fighting events in Aurora featuring up-and-coming Colorado fighters.
Lastly, to the masses of people who are still unfamiliar with the world’s fastest growing sport, Bobby says, “The one thing I think is great about MMA is that it’s a learning process.  A lot of times when people see it on TV, they’re like ‘ah, its just two guys standing and brawling’.  That’s completely not what it is.  MMA has almost turned into a chess match.  The one thing you should take away from your sport is discipline.”  Lashley is happy in the fact that his gym and his trainers have been able to bring discipline to several Aurora youths through his fitness programs.
